You need a GTI.
If you're going used, an Mk6 with the Autobahn package is an absolute bargain - They're going for $18 - $20k, just make sure it's 2012 or newer. New will probably stretch the budget a bit to get the right options. You NEED the upgraded xenon headlights. Also, the upgraded sound system is amazing, so I consider it a must have as well.

A good friend who is very pro VW said almost the same thing. Plaid seats would probably be the best option on top of the other great stuff you mentioned. How is the longevity on the Mk6? I don't want something that will start to crap out after 120K miles.

Four Miatas. Or a few DSM's.

Mine is a 2012 with just over 35k miles. No problems whatsoever at this point.
There are some expensive service requirements for the DSG transmission at 40k, doesn't apply if you get the manual. Some of them had issues with the intake manifold and fuel injectors, but VW extended the warranty on both parts to 10 yrs / 120k.
The only other prominent issues are with the timing chain tensioner - If it rattles at start up, there may be impending doom.
If going used, try to avoid one that's been modded or chipped.
Check out golfmk6.com, it seems to be a great resource.

Haha, I was waiting for someone to say Miata. I'd rather have 4 doors though. Miata is always the answer but not what I want.

Will start doing my research asap. What happens with the timing chain tensioner, faulty parts or design flaw? My number one thing is getting an unmodded vehicle, I want something bone stock or dealer modified only so I know what is going on under the hood if I decide to mod it.

What is the second car? I know it but can't put my finder on it.

The timing chain tensioner is a design flaw, there is an updated part. When it breaks, the chain skips, and your engine FUBARs itself.

How well will it fit a person 6'4"-6'6" tall? That is the biggest concern I have.

You should fit fine. Go sit in one - I'm 6'3", and with the seat lowered all the way there is plenty of headroom. It will move back far enough that my feet can't reach the pedals as well - Good for the driver, not so much for anyone sitting behind.

Gotcha, I'll give it a gander soon. I'm going to get insurance estimates from my agent as well to see if it's ridiculous to insure.
